In order to ensure a stable sealing function on the outgoing side of a motor shaft, both the rotary shaft seal and the properties on the surface of the shaft are important. Usually the roughness parameters, Rz and Rmax, are used for the characterisation of the shaft surfaces. Use of the manual string method is known to give inconsistent results and does not provide quantitative data. The LMT instrument lends itself to consistently detect and evaluate even the slightest amount of lead facts. Suitable lead parameters are used to unambiguously describe lead in order to characterise limit samples and workpieces. The lead structure is obtained by extracting relevant measuring parameters from a 3D surface profile. The 3D structure of the surface is measured with an LVDT. Invisible from the original roughness profile, the amount and kind of lead are calculated using a proprietary mathematical algorithm giving the lead parameters and a set of reliable numbers indicating the absence of lead. The system offers one-time fully automated lead parameter calculation as well as manual feasible scientific evaluation of the measured surface |
